WGU OA vs PA: what is the difference, and which is faster?

At a glance

Last updated

At WGU, an OA (objective assessment) is a proctored, exam-style test: pass it and the course is done that day. A PA (performance assessment) is a paper, project, or task scored against a written rubric: it clears when an evaluator accepts it, after any revision rounds. OAs are faster but higher-pressure; PAs are flexible but can loop in revisions for weeks.

  • OA: proctored exam, course ends the day you pass
  • PA: rubric-scored submission, clears on evaluator acceptance
  • OAs fail on knowledge gaps, PAs fail on rubric mismatches
  • Degree speed comes from sequencing both correctly

Every full package includes the written 6-month guarantee: we finish the remaining CUs under the agreed plan, or you do not pay. Packages: Bachelor's $3,000 · Master's $3,500 · both $5,500 · single assessments from $99.

What is an OA at WGU?

An objective assessment is a scored exam: multiple choice, scenario sets, or similar formats, usually proctored. Many WGU OAs run through PingOne device profiling plus ProctorU's Guardian Browser, so the environment is verified before the first question appears.

The OA is binary. Pass the cut score and the course is complete that day. There is no partial credit and no feedback loop, which makes OAs the fastest courses to clear and the most feared ones to sit for.

What is a PA at WGU?

A performance assessment is a deliverable: a paper, project, care plan, lesson unit, or similar artifact, scored by an evaluator against a course rubric. Nothing is proctored; you submit, wait for evaluation, and revise anything scored as not meeting the rubric.

PAs rarely fail on intelligence. They fail on structure: a section the rubric required that the draft never addressed. Each revision round costs days of evaluation turnaround, which is how one paper quietly eats a month.

Which is faster to clear, an OA or a PA?

For a prepared student, an OA is faster: one sitting, one result. A PA is slower but lower-pressure: no proctor, no single shot, but real writing time plus evaluation days. A degree's speed comes from interleaving them, not from preferring either.

The classic mistake is clearing every easy PA first and ending the term with three proctored OAs stacked into the final weeks. The reverse (all OAs first) burns out just as reliably. A written order that alternates exam pushes with writing pushes is what finishes terms early.

Which degrees are OA-heavy and which are PA-heavy?

Technology degrees lean OA: certification exams, math exams, theory exams. Nursing and teaching lean PA: research papers, lesson designs, reflections. Business sits between, with quantitative OAs early and capstone writing at the end.

Knowing your degree's mix tells you where your term will actually be spent. An OA-heavy list concentrates risk into a few exam days; a PA-heavy list spreads it across weeks of writing and evaluation turnaround.

What happens if you fail an OA or a PA?

A failed OA means a retake: new attempt, usually after a waiting period and sometimes a mentor conversation, and each extra sitting costs calendar time. A failed PA is softer but slower: the submission comes back with evaluator comments, you revise the flagged sections, and you wait through another evaluation round.

Both failures are recoverable and common. What makes them expensive is unstructured recovery: weeks pass before the retake, or the revision guesses at what the evaluator wanted instead of answering the rubric line by line.

How does Coursework Ninja handle OAs and PAs differently?

OAs go through our proctored-exam path: PingOne device profiling and the ProctorU Guardian environment are part of the plan, scheduled and completed for courses in scope. PAs go through our writing pipeline: rubric decoded first, submission built to it, revision rounds driven until the evaluator passes it.

Both sit on the same written CU order with weekly clear targets and a finish date, under the 6-month finish-or-do-not-pay guarantee.

Questions, answered

Almost. Most courses end in one of the two, and a few carry both a task and an exam or add smaller graded check-ins. At intake we classify every course on your remaining list so the plan matches the real assessment mix.

Typically a few days per submission, longer around holidays and term ends. Those days are dead time in an unplanned term; in our plans the writing pipeline for the next task runs while the previous one sits in evaluation.

Retakes are allowed with mentor approval, and some exams carry waiting periods or limits per term. Treat every attempt as scheduled project time: we place exam pushes on the plan with buffer so a retake never breaks the finish date.

Pre-assessments are unscored practice versions of the OA. Used well they tell you exactly which domains to attack before the real exam. We run them as part of the OA path so attempt day has no surprises.

Yes. Done-for-you completion covers both: we sit the proctored OA path for courses in scope and we produce and revise PA submissions until they pass. Scope is confirmed in writing before payment.
